Smart School Recycling

The Republic Services division in Fresno, California worked hard to solve one of their local school district's recycling challenges. To make it simple and user-friendly for students and staff alike, a no-sort system was set up. A Republic Services recycling coordinator visits each school and provides instruction and education regarding the simple disposal of waste and recycling material. “Dry” classroom materials go in large bins and get sorted at recycling centers where non-recyclable waste is removed. “Wet” waste, such as cafeteria items, go into designated containers for disposal.

Since so little waste generated in a classroom is not recyclable, it is the easiest and most effective method of capturing the most recyclables. This successful program has yielded a significant annual cost savings for the school district.
