Republic Services Celebrates Earth Day

We are proud of the environmental services we provide and, appropriately, use Earth Day as a platform for environmental education and community service. In fact, across the nation we do our part to leave the planet a little better than we found it. Here’s a sampling of dozens of events that have been sponsored by Republic Services around the country:

  • Lorain County Landfill – East Sparta, Ohio
Republic’s Lorain County Landfill in East Sparta, Ohio, donated 500 Scotch pine, Colorado blue spruce and Norway spruce tree seedlings to New Russia Township in Oberlin, Ohio. The township planted the trees in their nature area and cemetery.

  • Countywide Recycling and Disposal – Stark County, Ohio
The Countywide Recycling and Disposal Facility in Stark County, Ohio, donated Scotch pine tree seedlings to the Melscheimer One-Room School Renovation Project. They also distributed 500 Scotch pine tree seedlings to the general public. “Earth Day was a great opportunity to showcase our landfill and educate the public about us,” said Jeff Kraus, area community relations manager.

  • Republic Services of Southern Nevada – Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas Valley residents celebrated Earth Day at GREENFest, which Republic Services founded to educate the community on everyday recycling and environmental responsibility. Organizers provided drop-off bins for paper, cardboard, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, newspapers, plastics steel cans and glass. Additionally, confidential document destruction service was available.

  • Republic Services – Elgin, Illinois
A Republic Services’ recycling coordinator from Elgin, Illinois visited the pre-kindergarten class at the Goddard School in Lake in the Hills to talk about Earth Day. The recycling professional spoke to the kids about good recycling practices, garbage truck safety and things that families can do to reduce waste. The students practiced picking up litter during recess, made lists of reusable materials and worked together to create a classroom mascot out of recyclable materials.

  • Apex Regional Landfill – Las Vegas, Nevada
The Apex Regional Landfill in Las Vegas hosted a tour of the landfill for third grade students from Garehime Elementary School. The class was taken on a bus tour of Apex, showing the students the tippers for transfer trailers, the leachate collection system and the methane gas flare. Before leaving on the tour, the children were given a safety presentation, and they were outfitted in safety vests, hard hats and safety glasses.

Republic Services Community
Did you know that more than 800 divisions of Republic Services serve more than 13 million customers and 2,800 municipalities and communities around the nation? Just like your neighborhood store, school or utility, we play a vital role in our communities. However, our contribution doesn’t stop at waste collection, disposal and recycling.
